Sad news: Dance legend Jeni Le Gon passed away on December 7th at the age of 96. Born in Chicago in 1916, Ms. Le Gon began her career in the 1930s when she was just sixteen, dancing in a chorus line backed by Count Basie’s Orchestra. She is

probably best remembered for dancing with Bill “Bojangles” Robinson in the 1935 film “Hooray for Love”, which also featured Fats Waller. Here is a clip of their number, “Living In A Great Big Way,” where you can watch Ms. Le Gon dancing, singing and acting with Mr. Robinson and Mr. Waller.

I was scrolling through my Tumblr feed a year or so ago, when I saw a photo of Joyce Bryant. The caption said she was once dubbed the “black Marilyn Monroe” and was mentioned many times in Walter Winchell’s gossip column.

But, I had never heard of or seen Bryant before. It’s reactions like mine that led 42-year-old writer Nichelle Gainer to start a book project showcasing a collection of rarely seen historical photos of actors, educators, writers, students, musicians and more — all African-American.

“I write fiction for the most part, and when I am in libraries doing research … I’ve come across a lot of different interesting articles and photos that you never see anywhere else,” says Gainer, who has written for Woman’s Day, GQ, InStyle, Essence and Honey magazines. ”They’re just locked in these ivory towers, whether it’s an academic institution or a library.”

Gainer, who is still working on her book, decided to share her photo finds and now curates the Vintage Black Glamour Tumblr blog, Facebook page and Pinterest account. Much of what she posts are photos you likely haven’t seen before of stars you may know.

Todays song ‘Gypsy Blue’ can be found on Freddie’s debut (as a leader) album ‘Open Sesame’, recorded at Van Gelder’s studio on June 19th, 1960. The recordings were done in one (1) day, mind you. Which was common practice these days, but still…

The real star of ‘Gypsy Blue’ is Tina Brooks, who also wrote the song. Freddie Hubbard said about him: “…Ike Quebec introduced me to Tina at the 845 Club. Ike also introduced me to Alfred Lion. I loved Tina. He had a nice feeling. I got into him before I got into Hank (Mobley). He would write shit out on the spot and it would be beautiful. He wrote Gypsy Blue for me on the first record and I loved it. I just loved it. Tina made my first record date wonderful. He wrote and played beautifully. What a soulful, inspiring cat. I loved him…”

Alas, Brooks did not record after 1961. Plagued by heroin dependency and a gradually deteriorating health, he died of liver failure aged just 42, in 1974.
